Day 1, 2, 3 - Selinda Explorers Camp, Linyanti

Fly from Maun to Selinda.

Selinda Explorers Camp is poised in a remote, treasured location on the famous Selinda Spillway. As the lifeline of the Selinda Reserve, the Selinda Spillway is a crucial gathering point for the wildlife of this pristine 320,000-acre concession.

This classic camp, consisting of four custom-designed tents, transports us back to authentic safaris, but with a modern twist and hospitality. Subtly placed under the shade of the riverine forest, the camp is designed in the style of the early explorers both in philosophy and practice. Whiling away afternoons under the canopy of jackelberry and mangosteen trees, interspersed with walks and canoeing, make this a respite from the 'daily grind' of a traditional safari. Get out, stretch your legs and feel Africa's pulse - this is the place for you.

Each of the four custom-designed, walk-in tents is expansive; however, in keeping with a bit of traditional safari, the en-suite flush loo and shower are attached and enclosed, but under the stars. Hot/Cold water are provided by jug on demand. The double-vanity copper vanities and dressing make for spacious accommodation. Stylishly decorated with campaign-style furniture, decanters of cognac and Persian rugs, the dŽcor pays homage to the roots of safari. As a romantic touch, brass hipbaths can be portered to a nearby sand bank on the banks of the Spillway. And personal hammocks adorn each verandah.

Days 4, 5 - Camp Kalahari, Makgadikgadi

Fly from Selinda to Makgadikgadi

Camp Kalahari is a return to the traditional safari style of the old explorers, and is the best way to experience the Makgadikgadi in a fresh and affordable way. It is the ideal camp for those who want fun, comfort, style and adventure. Camp Kalahari accepts children of all ages and makes for a fantastic family safari destination.

This traditional bush camp has ten spacious Meru tents, comprising six twin tents, three double tents and one family unit which has two adjacent tents, accommodating two Guests in each with an inter-leading bathroom. All Guest tents have en-suite covered bathrooms, hot and cold running water and flush loos along with four poster beds, crunchy cotton sheets, rich textiles, Moroccan kilims and hot water bottles in winter.

A thatched central library, living and dining area featuring an eclectic mix of original African furniture and textiles paired with traditional campaign style pieces and colonial antiques provide the perfect area in which to relax and enjoy the serenity of this enchanting area. For those who'd like to cool off, or enjoy a lazy siesta in or out of the sun, the thatched swimming pool pavilion is ideal.

Days 6, 7 - Kubu Island Camping, Makgadikgadi

Sleep out under the stars for two nights amongst the boulders and baobabs on Kubu Island. One of the most graphically beautiful spots in Botswana, it is full of intriguing detail, such as stone walls, trade and Bushman beads. It is also close to what is probably the biggest greater and lesser flamingo breeding site in the world.

The best way to get across the saltpan is to fly like the kites and the crows, otherwise it is a quad bike. This is low-impact trespass. Setting off early in convoy, bikes carry bedrolls, food and water, a long-range desert patrol driving Indian-fashion. Here you lose contact with time, space and direction. You hum along, travelling without perceptively moving, while all the power and conceit of commerce and position evaporate, the delicate network of friends and plans and diaries, all the human hierarchy of achievement and aspiration ebb away. As the sun begins to drop, a smudge on the horizon - Kubu Island! A 2.7 billion year old granite fist that rises unexpectedly out of the vast and empty salt pan flatness of Sowa Pan.

The camp staff will get there first; boiling a cauldron of water bubbles for the shower suspended from a tree. The dining table is set and the drinks tray, with Beefeater, and Georgian fobs on bottle labels, stands waiting. A mobile drinks chest is set up by our trusty team and Guests are able to lean back in their safari chairs while toasting their toes around the roaring camp fire. Dinners are three course culinary extravaganzas, laid out on white damask tablelinen, decked with fine glassware and bone-handled silver. An embarassment of riches in this extraordinary and desolate domain! These two days are spent exploring the fascinating and surreal surrounding area.

Day 8 - Camp Kalahari

Back to Camp Kalahari on the quad bikes and some time to relax for the night or explore further before departing the next day
